SUMMIT in One Vanderbilt
The Big Apple’s new must – SUMMIT in the new skyscraper One Vanderbilt – is opening to the public on October 21st. Situated in Midtown Manhattan, an area still battered by the pandemic with many office buildings still half empty, SUMMIT is the biggest example of New York skyline’s expansion.
Much more than a rooftop, way more than an observatory deck. It’s a multisensorial experience, a sort of attraction park for adults that wakes up the enthusiasm of the little kid hidden in all of us. The attractions are part of a 65,000-square-foot entertainment area situated at the peak of the $3.3 billion One Vanderbilt development, designed by architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.
At 1,401 feet high, the skyscraper is the fourth tallest in New York City.
I visit it expecting a classic New York rooftop with a view. The first attraction already leaves me speechless.
After a very futuristic and sci-fi entrance, an extremely quick elevator trip with music takes you in about 20 seconds to the 91st floor without even feeling the ascent.
AIR by Kenzo Design
A gigantic multi-room, awe-inspiring, multi-level attraction with mirrored walls all over, glass floors, unbelievable views.
Defined as one of the most mind-bending art experiences in the world, AIR is the brilliant creation of NY artist Kenzo Digital, who aimed to build “not just a background for Instagram photos”, but an art installation that “truly inspires and creates an emotional bond with the City.”
For a few minutes, I think the people I see walking on a few different floors underneath me are real. Instead, they are reflections created by thousands of mirrors. I can see myself a few floors under my feet. And on the roof.
By chance, I notice some of the people I see on the two floor above are real and not just mirror images. I then understand the pathway continues.
Levitation
I access another big room with silver sculptures. That’s where the second attraction is situated. Levitation: two suspended and transparent balconies, 1063 feet above street level. Unmissable photo opportunity. I sit on the floor. Only a sheet of glass separates me from free falling from almost 100 floors. Inevitably, I start hoping the glass is strong enough to hold my weight.
I suggest you pick the balcony on the left for a better view of the Empire.
Balloon Room
The following room makes me the happiest: The Balloon room, a big lounge with thousands of mirrored silver flying balloons you can play with. The perfect place for kids of every age. But also a nice spot for unique videos and photos.
I take the escalator to the two floors above. You can admire the mirrored Air lounge also from upstairs. Just another interesting perspective for the most immersive observatory experience.
On another floor above, there’s a small restaurant-bar with a graceful fireplace. I get to the outdoor part of the deck. A very fresh wind, even in October. During the Spring and Summer, this could be an awesome place for parties or wedding proposals. The view is stratospheric.
Outdoor deck and Ascent
From outside, I notice a small elevator that gets people closer to the tower’s spire. It’s a sort of freight lift, all transparent. It moves slowly and it’s even a bit noisy. A sharp contrast with the rest of the state-of-the-art, high-tech building. In my opinion, it’s purposely made to add a last and unexpected emotional shiver to the whole experience.
It’s called Ascent: Another unique activity, with our heads above the clouds. Breathtaking panorama: New York, its bridges, its rivers, its more or less historical skyscrapers. Once it gets to the top, the freight elevator stops. Doors don’t open. For a couple minutes, a bit of uncertainty. Did the elevator just get stuck almost 100 floors above street level? I press the button to open the doors, but it doesn’t work. A few seconds later, the elevator starts its slow, noisy, and a bit shaky descent. Nervousness vanishes and I am able to enjoy even more the marvels of the view.
They offer me a booklet with pictures taken from above. Very cute.
The elevator ride back to the street surprises me again. An incredible combo of impressive speed and movement’s imperceptibility, garnished with loud music and psychedelic lights.
I get out of the building a bit disoriented, but happy, with the almost impossible mission to re-balance my senses in the uproar of the most incredible metropolis in the world.

Il nuovo must a NY
In vista dell’imminente apertura delle frontiere statunitensi ai viaggiatori italiani, vi presento il nuovo must della Grande Mela, che aprirà al pubblico questa settimana: si tratta di SUMMIT nel nuovo grattacielo One Vanderbilt a Midtown Manhattan. Un’area centrale di New York, che ancora stenta a riprendersi dalla pandemia, con i suoi tanti uffici tutt’ora parzialmente vuoti. Eppure, il suo skyline continua ad espandersi.
SUMMIT è molto più di una semplice terrazza (o rooftop), molto più di un osservatorio.
È un’esperienza multisensoriale, una sorta di lunapark per adulti che risveglia l’entusiasmo e il fanciullino nascosto in ognuno di noi.
Lo visito aspettandomi un classico rooftop newyorkese con vista e già la prima tappa mi lascia sbalordita.
Dopo un ingresso che ricorda i film di fantascienza e un rapidissimo viaggio in ascensore con musica ad alto volume, che ti porta al 91mo piano in una ventina di secondi senza minimamente sentire lo spostamento, è la volta della prima attrazione.
AIR
Air è un enorme salone con pareti a specchio e pavimento di vetro. Viste mozzafiato, che però quasi passano in secondo piano. Creato dall’artista newyorkese Kenzo Digital, ha l’obiettivo di essere “non soltanto uno sfondo per foto su Instagram, ma una vera fonte di ispirazione che crei un legame emotivo” con la città di New York.
Per qualche minuto, penso che la gente che vedo camminare diversi piani sotto di me sia reale. Invece, si tratta del riflesso di migliaia di specchi.
Quasi per sbaglio, noto che alcune persone ai piani superiori sono vere e non fanno parte dei miliardi di riflessi. Capisco che il percorso continua.
Levitation
Entro in un altro salone con sculture argentate. È qui che si trova la seconda attrazione: Levitation. Due balconcini sospesi a 324 metri, sporgenti e totalmente in vetro. Altro bel posto per una foto da sogno.
È qui che ti viene scattata la foto ricordo dall’alto. Consiglio il balconcino sulla sinistra perché ha una vista miglliore sull’Empire State Building. Mi siedo a terra, sentendomi davvero sospesa nel vuoto. Mi separa da una caduta libera di quasi 100 piani solo una lastra di vetro. In quel momento, quasi inevitabilmente, mi auguro che sia forte abbastanza da reggere il mio peso.
Stanza dei palloncini
La stanza successiva è quella che mi rende più felice: la Balloon room, un salone panoramico pieno di grossi palloncini argentati e specchiati. Uno sballo per bambini di ogni età. Posto perfetto per foto e video unici.
MI dirigo verso i due piani superiori. È possible ammirare il salone Air anche dall’alto.
Scopro un bar ristorante con un grazioso caminetto. E poi l’uscita verso la parte esterna della terrazza. Un venticello fresco persino ad ottobre. In primavera o estate sarà un posto da sballo, con vista da brivido.
Dall’esterno, noto un piccolo ascensore che porta ancora più su, vicino alla punta del grattacielo.
Devo provarlo. Si tratta, in realtà, di una sorta di montacarichi, che si sposta in modo lento e rumoroso. Il contrasto con il resto dell’edificio super high tec è forte. Sicuramente un espediente per dare un ennesimo ed inaspettato brivido ai visitatori.
Ascent
Si chiama Ascent ed è un’altra esperienza unica, con la testa sopra le nuvole. Un panorama mozzafiato: New York, i suoi ponti, i fiumi, i grattacieli più o meno storici. Arrivato in alto, l’ascensore si ferma. Le porte non si aprono. Per un paio di minuti non si sa cosa stia succedendo. Si è bloccato l’ascensore quasi 100 piani sopra il livello del mare? Provo ad aprire le porte con l’apposito pulsante, ma non funziona. Penso sia tutto fatto apposta.
Dopo poco, il montacarichi inizia una lenta discesa. Il nervosismo svanisce e riesco ad assaporare ancora meglio la vista.
Mi offrono un libretto con le foto fatte dall’alto. Da non sottovalutare. Gli americani sono bravissimi in queste cose.
Il viaggio di ritorno in ascensore mi sorprende nuovamente: Un’incredibile combinazione di velocità impressionante ed impercettibilità del movimento, condita con musica a tutto volume e luci psichedeliche.
Esco un po’ disorientata, ma felice, con la missione quasi impossibile di riequilibrare i miei sensi nel frastuono della metropoli più incredibile del mondo. Welcome to New York!
