Alex Sarr: The New Generation of French Talent in the NBA

Alex Sarr, a rising star in the world of basketball, embodies the new wave of French talents with African roots making their mark in the NBA. Born into a family of basketball players, he grew up with this sport in his blood. His father, Massar Sarr, was a professional player in Senegal, and his older brother, Olivier Sarr, has played in the NBA with the Oklahoma City Thunder. According to Alex, his brother has been his biggest mentor, providing invaluable advice for his career.

A Passion for Basketball from a Young Age

Alex’s basketball journey began at the tender age of 4, and his natural talent quickly became evident. His dedication and skill development paved the way for his transition to the American professional league after gaining international experience.

Selected as the second overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Alex is currently playing his rookie season with the Washington Wizards as both a center and power forward. Despite facing challenges such as injuries and a youthful roster, he remains a beacon of hope for the future of the franchise.

A Growing African Basketball Presence

The Basketball Africa League (BAL), now entering its fifth season, is a significant development for African basketball. The league will host its upcoming games in Rabat (Morocco) 5-13 April and then Dakar (Senegal) April 26-May 4.

Alex Sarr is keen to acknowledge the progress made in nurturing African basketball talent:

“It’s very interesting. Sometimes I watch highlights from the BAL, and I think it’s impressive. There’s so much talent in Africa, and to have the chance to play games like that is amazing.”

The French boom

Alex is particularly excited about the increasing presence of French players in the NBA, reflecting the country’s growing influence in international basketball.

“I think it’s just about the talent we have. More and more young French players are making their way to the NBA, and it’s really exciting for the future of our national team.”

An International Journey Before Reaching the NBA

Before reaching the NBA, Alex honed his skills in several countries, including Australia, Spain, and France. His international experiences were invaluable in preparing him for the rigors of the American league:

“I’ve learned a lot from playing in different environments, adapting to new teams, and understanding various playing styles. It has all been really helpful,” he shared.

His early months in the NBA have also been a learning experience, as he continues to refine his game and adjust to the demanding schedule:

“I’m learning to manage the schedule, listen to veteran players’ advice, and work every day to become a better player.”

With his continued growth and the support of his family and mentors, Alex Sarr represents a bright future not only for the Washington Wizards but also for the Franco-Senegalese basketball legacy in the NBA.
