The NBA Cup is at stake

After the group stage of the In-Season Tournament – the new event created by the NBA to promote the international growth of basketball and its business, inspired by the British FA Cup and by other international soccer cups – the most exciting phase of the event is now beginning: The knockout rounds.

The quarterfinals will take place on December 4th and 5th, the semifinals on the 7th, and the final on December 9^th.

Quarterfinals

The quarterfinal matches will be played on the home floor of the four highest seeds, two for the Eastern Conference and two for the Western Conference.

Final Four or semifinals

In the following phase, the T-Mobile Arena in Sin City, Las Vegas, will host the Final Four at 5 P.M. EST (2 P.M. local time) and 9 P.M. EST (5 P.M. local time) on December 7th.

One semifinal between the two winning teams of the Eastern Conference and another semifinal for the two teams from the Western Conference that qualify.

The Final

Then, the final will take place at 8:30 P.M. EST (5:30 local time): The best team from the East will face the best team from the West on neutral ground to win the first NBA Cup in history.

Quarterfinal Schedule:

• Jayson Tatum’s Boston Celtics (winners of Group C in the East) will face the Indiana Pacers on their turf (Group A’s top seed in the East) on Monday at 7:30 PM local time.
• The second game on December 4^th will see the New Orleans Pelicans (top seed in Group B of the Western Conference) visit the Sacramento Kings (winners of Group C in the West). The game kicks off at 10:00 PM EST.
• On December 5^th, Giannis Antetokounmpo’s and Damian Lillard’s Milwaukee Bucks (top seed in Group B of the Eastern Conference) will host the wild card New York Knicks at 7:30 PM EST.
• Lastly, the anticipated duel between the Los Angeles Lakers with their legendary captain LeBron James (leading Group A in the Western Conference) and Durant-Booker’s Phoenix Suns (wild card) at 10:00 PM EST.

The NBA Cup

Except for the final, the games also count towards the NBA’s regular season.

The team that wins the final on December 9th will be awarded the NBA Cup and a prize of $500,000 for each player on its roster.

How did the qualifiers work?

The 30 teams in the American league were divided into six groups, three for each conference, and played four qualifying games in the month of November. Tuesday marked the last day of the group stage, finalizing the quarter-final bracket.

Finita la fase a gironi dell’In-Season Tournament – il nuovo torneo creato dalla NBA per far crescere il gioco del basket e il suo giro d’affari ispirandosi alla FA Cup inglese ed alle altre Coppe del calcio internazionale – si entra nella fase più entusiasmante dell’evento: i quarti di finale il 4 e 5 dicembre, le semifinali il 7 e la finale il 9 dicembre (notte del 10 in Italia). 

Le partite dei quarti si giocheranno in casa delle squadre che hanno passato il turno con il punteggio più alto nel proprio girone. 

Semifinali e finale a Las Vegas

Nella fase successiva, sarà la T-Mobile arena di Sin City  – la città del peccato, ossia Las Vegas – ad ospitare la final four alle 23 del 7 ed alle 3 di notte dell’8 (ora italiana): una semifinale tra le due squadre vincenti della Eastern Conference ed un’altra semifinale per le due squadre della Western conference che passano il turno. 

 Poi la finale alle 2:30 della notte italiana del 10 dicembre: la migliore squadra dell’est affronterà  in terra neutrale la migliore dell’ovest per aggiudicarsi la prima NBA Cup della storia.

Il programma dei quarti

Nei quarti di finale, i Boston Celtics di Tatum (vincitori del gruppo C ad est) affronteranno i lanciatissimi Indiana Pacers (n.1 del gruppo A ad est) lunedì  alle 19:30 ora locale (martedì all’1:30 di notte ora italiana). 

A seguire, la sfida tra i New Orleans Pelicans (n.1 del gruppo B della Western Conference) e i Sacramento Kings di Fox e Sabonis (vincitori del gruppo C ad ovest. 22 EST, 4 della notte italiana).

 Il giorno successivo, la wild card New York Knicks giocherà in casa dei favoritissimi Milwaukee Bucks di Giannis Antetokounmpo e Lillard (n.1 del gruppo B della Eastern Conference. 7:30 EST, 1:30 del 6 in Italia).

 Per finire, l’atteso duello tra il Los Angeles Lakers dell’ormai leggendario LeBron James  (in testa al gruppo A delle Western Conference) e i Phoenix Suns (wild card) di Devin Booker e Kevin Durant (10 PM EST, 4 della notte italiana). 

La NBA Cup

Le partite, esclusa la finale, hanno valore anche per il campionato NBA. 

La squadra che vincerà la finale del 9 dicembre si aggiudica la Coppa NBA ed un riconoscimento di 500 mila dollari per ogni giocatore del roster. 

Come funzionavano le qualificazioni?

Le 30 squadre della lega americana sono state divise in sei gruppi, tre per ogni conference, ed hanno giocato quattro partite di qualificazione nel mese di novembre.

Martedì è stata l’ultima giornata della fase a gironi, che ha permesso di finalizzare il tabellone finale dei quarti.
