A hundred years after its humble beginnings, the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade returned to the streets of New York City this year with a dazzling lineup of balloons, floats, and star-studded performances. The 2024 parade combined timeless traditions with fresh elements, making it a fitting tribute to a century of holiday cheer.
A Star-Studded Spectacle
This year’s parade featured a packed schedule of performances and appearances. Jennifer Hudson, Idina Menzel, Kylie Minogue, Jimmy Fallon & The Roots, Lea Salonga, and many others brought musical magic to the festivities. The WNBA champion New York Liberty joined the celebration, alongside other notable names like Ariana Madix and T-Pain.

From country duo Dan + Shay to Broadway veterans and hip-hop legends, the parade offered something for everyone. Alison Brie, serving as the Macy’s spokesperson, added an extra touch of Hollywood glamor to the day.

Balloons, Floats, and All the Fun
New helium balloons for 2024 included an updated Spider-Man design and a cheerful Minnie Mouse, joining beloved classics like Snoopy and Bluey. The parade featured 17 giant character balloons, alongside 15 novelty and heritage inflatables.

The floats this year were particularly inventive. A highlight was Rao’s food brand float, featuring a knight battling a dragon constructed entirely of pasta. Another standout was a tribute to the Bronx Zoo’s 125th anniversary, showcasing beautifully designed animals like a tiger, giraffe, and gorilla.

A new coffee-and-bagel-themed float celebrated quintessential New York traditions.
Marching Through Manhattan
The parade began at 8:30 a.m. on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, winding its way down a 2.5-mile route to Macy’s Herald Square on 34th Street.

Along the way, spectators enjoyed performances from 11 marching bands, 10 performance groups, and an energetic troupe of 700 clowns.
As always, Santa Claus brought the parade to a grand conclusion, ushering in the holiday season to the delight of children and adults alike.

Weathering the Elements
A steady rain added ponchos and umbrellas to the parade’s colorful mix, but the spirit of the event remained undampened. Temperatures hovered in the upper 40s, and light winds allowed the iconic balloons to soar high above the city. Parade organizers monitored wind speeds closely, adhering to safety regulations that restrict flying the balloons if sustained winds exceed 23 mph or gusts reach over 35 mph.

A Century of Tradition
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade has come a long way since its inaugural event in 1924, which featured fairy tale-themed floats of Mother Goose, Red Riding Hood, and Miss Muffet. What hasn’t changed is its ability to bring joy to millions of viewers, both in person and on television.

Executive producer Will Coss summed it up best: “The work that we do, the opportunity to impact millions of people and bring a bit of joy for a couple of hours on Thanksgiving morning, is what motivates us every day.”
As the parade celebrated its 100th anniversary, it once again proved why it’s a beloved holiday tradition, kicking off the festive season with unparalleled style and splendor.
