What is one aspect of the NBA that Simone Fontecchio didn’t know about and had to familiarize himself with while living in the world of American basketball?

“Definitely the aspect of trades,” replied the Italian national team forward. “I had never experienced changing teams halfway through the season.”

Unexpected Trade

Despite being described just over a month ago by the coach of the Utah Jazz as the symbol of the team’s character in Salt Lake City, just before the trade deadline, Simone Fontecchio found himself thrust into another team, in another conference, in another city.

This is perhaps one of the most difficult aspects of a professional athlete’s life, especially in America: bonds are formed with teammates, everyone works together towards a goal, and then, due to market dynamics, one changes teams halfway through the season, former teammates become new rivals, and one must start over with a new group and a new coach. “The NBA world works this way: anything can happen from one moment to the next, and you have to be prepared for it. But until it happens to you, you don’t realize how many people are then involved, from your family to your children and all the people around you,” commented the Italian player.

A new life in Detroit

For Fontecchio, it was a sudden, unexpected change. A flood of emotions, particularly because it also upheaved the lives of his family, that loved living in Utah. “Certainly, it wasn’t an easy period of time, but I’m happy with where I am now, with the team I’m playing for, and with all the space and responsibilities I have,” said the Pescara-born small forward, who is facing the new challenge with determination and excellent performances, not forgetting to smile and not neglecting the power of positive thinking.

Fontecchio & Gallinari NBA teammates for a few hours

For a few hours, Simone became teammates with another Italian in the NBA, Danilo Gallinari, who welcomed him but later signed a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks, his eighth NBA franchise after the Knicks, Nuggets, Clippers, Thunder, Hawks, Wizards, and Pistons.

While Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Bucks could be among the contenders for the NBA finals, there are no playoff ambitions for Fontecchio’s Pistons, who currently have the worst record in the league. “There’s a lot to work on, but also a lot of room for improvement,” Fontecchio said of this young group eager to grow.

Fontecchio’s future

At the moment, Simone is focused on his new experience in Detroit and is aware that he will have to, once again, earn every minute of play and the respect of the new team. His wife and daughter are still in Utah but will soon join him. His future sees him in the NBA, and he is grateful to the Pistons for the welcome and trust they have shown him so far. In his first games wearing the Pistons jersey, Simone has continued to demonstrate not only great talent but also the personality, strength, and character necessary to succeed in the most competitive basketball league in the world.

Qual è un aspetto della NBA che Simone Fontecchio non conosceva e col quale ha dovuto familiarizzarsi vivendo nel mondo del basket americano? 

“Sicuramente quello delle trade,” ha risposto l’ala dell’italbasket. “Non mi era mai successo di cambiare squadra così a metà anno.” 

Trade improvvisa

Pur essendo stato descritto poco più di un mese fa dal coach degli Utah Jazz come il simbolo del carattere della squadra di Salt Lake City, poco prima della trade deadline Simone Fontecchio si è ritrovato catapultato in un’altra squadra, in un’altra conference, in un’altra città. Questo è forse uno degli aspetti più difficili della vita di un atleta professionista, in particolare in America: si creano legami con i compagni, si lavora insieme verso un obiettivo e poi, per dinamiche di mercato, si cambia squadra a metà campionato, gli ex compagni diventano nuovi rivali e si deve ricominciare da capo con un nuovo gruppo ed un nuovo allenatore. “È un mondo che funziona così. L’NBA funziona così: può succedere tutto da un momento all’altro ed uno lo mette in conto. Però fino a quando non ti capita non ti rendi conto di quante persona poi vengono coinvolte, dalla tua famiglia ai tuoi figli ed a tutte le persone che ti stanno accanto,” ha commentato l’azzurro. 

Fontecchio contento dello spazio e delle responsabilità coi Pistons

Per Fontecchio, un cambiamento improvviso, inaspettato. Un fiume di emozioni, in particolare perché stravolge anche la vita della sua famiglia, che tanto adorava vivere in Utah. “Sicuramente non è stato un periodo facile, però sono contento di dove mi trovo adesso, della squadra con cui sto giocando e di tutto lo spazio e le responsabilità che sto avendo,” ha detto il cestista pescarese, che sta affrontando la nuova sfida con grinta ed ottime prestazioni, non dimenticando di sorridere e non trascurando il potere del pensiero positivo. 

Fontecchio & Gallinari compagni di squadra in NBA per qualche ora

Per qualche ora, Simone era diventato compagno di squadra dell’altro italiano dell’NBA, Danilo Gallinari, che gli aveva dato il benvenuto ma aveva successivamente firmato un contratto con i Milwaukee Bucks, la sua ottava franchigia NBA dopo Knicks, Nuggets, Clippers, Thunder, Hawks, Wizards e Pistons. 

Mentre i Bucks di Giannis Antetokounmpo potrebbero essere tra i contendenti per conquistarsi una finale NBA, niente ambizioni playoff per i Pistons di Fontecchio, che attualmente hanno il peggior record della lega. “C’è tanto da lavorare, ma anche tanto margine di miglioramento,” ha detto Fontecchio di questo gruppo giovane che ha tanta voglia di crescere. 

Fontecchio e i Pistons

Al momento, Simone è concentrato sulla sua nuova esperienza a Detroit ed è consapevole del fatto che dovrà, ancora una volta, guadagnarsi ogni minuto di gioco ed il rispetto del nuovo team. Sua moglie e sua figlia si trovano ancora in Utah, ma non tarderanno a raggiungerlo. Il suo futuro lo vede in NBA ed è grato ai Pistons per l’accoglienza e la fiducia dimostrategli finora. Nelle sue prime partite con la maglia dei Pistons, Simone ha continuato a dar prova di avere non soltanto un grande talento, ma anche la personalità, la forza ed il carattere necessari per avere successo nel campionato di pallacanestro più competitivo al mondo.
