Fontecchio’s growth

In his second season in the NBA, Simone Fontecchio is solidifying his role with the Utah Jazz and in the American league. It’s been a gradual but consistent growth that has recently led him to secure a starting position in the team’s lineup.

His approach to basketball and the way he faces games and practices every day have earned him the respect of the American basketball world, especially of his teammates. Even from a personality standpoint, a change is noticeable: He has become a charismatic leader and is much more self-assured.

Confidence and Respect

“Last year he was very quiet, while this year he’s shown great humour and wit,” said Utah Jazz coach Will Hardy to Valeria Rubino. “He’s very sarcastic and has integrated very well into the group. It’s been fun to see him grow not only on the court but in his relationship with his teammates.”

Leader

It may seem paradoxical but, at 28 years old, the small forward from Pescara is one of the veterans of the team and has embraced his role as a guide and role model for younger players. “I try to take on more responsibilities, even vocally: Maybe say something to the younger guys during games,” commented the Azzurro. “It’s something they want from me, and I’m happy to do it.”

Stability

Simone has also been aided by the fact that he is in a more stable situation than usual. After changing teams and countries every basketball season in recent years, playing for the Salt Lake City team for the second consecutive season is a very positive factor that facilitates his progress. In Utah, love for the Italian is growing, and articles dedicated to him and his impressive performances in a cohesive team, where no one feels like a superstar, are multiplying. Everyone focuses more on the team’s success than individual statistics.

Adapting to the NBA

After a first season of adaptation, the 6’7” small forward has fully understood his role within the team. “I think it’s a learning process every time someone comes to this league. There are things to understand, certain mechanisms, certain dynamics,” explains Fontecchio. “Certainly, I feel more confident now when I step on the court. I have the coach’s trust, my teammates’ trust, and that helps me.”

La Crescita in NBA

Il suo approccio al basket ed il modo in cui affronta ogni giorno partite ed allenamenti gli hanno permesso di conquistarsi il rispetto del mondo della pallacanestro americana e dei suoi compagni in particolare. Anche dal punto di vista della sua personalità si nota un cambiamento: è diventato un leader trascinatore ed è molto più sicuro di sé.

Fiducia e rispetto

“L’anno scorso era molto silenzioso, mentre quest’anno sta dando prova di avere un grande buonsenso ed un umorismo profondo,” ha detto al Corriere il coach degli Utah Jazz Will Hardy. “È molto sarcastico e si è ambientato benissimo all’interno del gruppo. È stato divertente vederlo crescere non solo in campo ma nel rapporto con i compagni di squadra.”

Ruolo da leader

Sembra un paradosso, ma a 28 anni per l’ala piccola pescarese è uno dei veterani della squadra ed ha abbracciato la sua funzione di fare da guida e modello per giocatori più giovani. “Cerco di prendermi più responsabilità, anche a livello vocale: magari dire qualcosa ai ragazzi più giovani anche durante le partite,” ha commentato l’azzurro. “E’ un qualcosa che loro vogliono da me e che io faccio volentieri.”

Stabilità

Ad aiutare Simone è stato anche il fatto di essere in una situazione più stabile del solito: dopo aver cambiato squadra e paese ogni stagione cestistica negli ultimi anni, giocare per il team di Salt Lake City per la seconda stagione consecutiva è un fattore molto positivo e facilita i suoi progressi. Nello Utah cresce l’amore per l’italiano e si moltiplicano gli articoli dedicati a lui ed alle sue belle prestazioni in una squadra compatta, in cui nessuno si sente una superstar e tutti badano più al successo di gruppo che alle statistiche individuali.

Adattarsi all’NBA

Dopo una prima stagione di adattamento, lo small forward di 2 metri e 1 centimetro ha compreso appieno il suo ruolo all’interno della squadra. “ Penso sia un processo di apprendimento ogni volta che qualcuno arriva in questa lega. Ci sono cose da imparare, da capire, certi meccanismi, certe dinamiche,” spiega Fontecchio. “Sicuramente mi sento più tranquillo adesso quando vado in campo. Ho la fiducia dell’allenatore, dei miei compagni e questo mi aiuta.”
