Exclusive Interview with Valeria Rubino

Moussa Diabaté’s journey to the NBA wasn’t an easy one. He navigated the tough landscape of the G League, endured the uncertainty of two-way contracts, and with relentless dedication, finally earned a multi-year deal with the Charlotte Hornets. For this young Franco-Malian-Guinean forward, making it to the NBA is not just a career milestone, but a testament to the power of hard work. In this exclusive interview, Moussa reflects on his path, the challenges he faced, and the growth of basketball in Africa.

“The G League Teaches Patience”

Valeria Rubino: You spent time in the G League before securing a full NBA contract. How did you experience this phase, and what did it teach you?

Moussa Diabaté: It taught me a lot about training and preparation. The G League is really a school for patience and mindset. It pushes you to stay focused on your goal, even when you’re unsure about your place there. It’s a process, but the hard work always pays off in the end.

The Support of Victor Wembanyama and the Rising Generation

Valeria Rubino: Victor Wembanyama frequently highlights the talent coming from France. What does it mean to you?

Moussa Diabaté: It’s a pleasure to see, because Victor is an amazing player and a true representative of our generation. I don’t know him personally, but it’s always motivating to see our hard work being recognized. It gives us more energy to keep pushing forward.

The Impact of NBA Africa and the Growth of Basketball on the Continent

Valeria Rubino: With your roots in Mali and Guinea, how do you view the development of African basketball through NBA Africa and the Basketball Africa League (BAL)?

Moussa Diabaté: It’s massive. As an African and Franco-Malian-Guinean, I’m really proud to see the NBA spotlighting our talents. Many of the best players in the world have African roots, and now, with platforms like the BAL, young athletes have more opportunities to showcase themselves. It’s a game-changer for the future of basketball on the continent.

“Stay Focused on Yourself, Don’t Let Doubters Influence You”

Valeria Rubino: What advice would you give to young Africans and Europeans dreaming of making it to the NBA?

Moussa Diabaté: Never give up, and above all, don’t listen to those who doubt you. No one knows what your future holds. A lot of young players get distracted by what others are doing, but that’s not what will lead you to success. Stay focused on your own journey, on your work, and the results will come.

Moussa Diabaté represents perseverance and the importance of believing in yourself, no matter the obstacles. His story proves that the road to the NBA is never easy, but with discipline, mental strength, and relentless effort, success will follow.
