Extremely happy with his choice to move to Canada and play in the American Major League Soccer (MLS), Lorenzo Insigne does not give up his Italian habits, starting with his diet.

The forward continues to follow the advice of Italian nutritionist Sacha Sorrentino and is fortunate to have a wife who cooks very well at home. Even during training camps and away games with his team since 2022 – Toronto FC – they make sure to follow his meal plan, providing him with Italian dishes that help his performance and mood.

Love for Toronto, new lifestyle

Having grown up, even in football terms, in Naples, he misses the warmth of his city, but his new group is doing everything to make him feel at home and Insigne shows a lot of gratitude and a strong desire to do well. Despite the difficulty of adapting to the overseas championship and a new life, thanks to the great reception from the city of Toronto and the Canadian club, the 32-year-old player has managed not to feel too much detachment from his Naples and to quickly get used to a new lifestyle. “I really enjoy being with my family: the club gives us a lot of time to spend with our loved ones, and for players this is very important,” he says. Of course, he sometimes feels homesick, but the experience abroad is still interesting, positive, and very constructive.

Napoli is my home

“Naples is missed because it is my home. I was born and raised there, I have had beautiful moments wearing the Napoli jersey,” explains the former captain of the Neapolitan team, then complaining that the American football league is somewhat underestimated by Italians.

MLS is snubbed in Italy

“The MLS is very competitive. It is somewhat snubbed. In my opinion, it is a great championship, there are great players.”

Napoli’s scudetto and new season

After 11 seasons with Napoli, Insigne signed the agreement with the Canadian club. The following year, the coveted victory of the league title for the blue and white team. “I am always the number one Napoli fan. Last year the players and the coach made us live unforgettable moments that we – as fans – had been waiting for a long time,” explains Insigne, who then comments on the difficulties that Napoli is facing this year. “Football is like that. I see that they are recovering and, surely, they will fight to reach the Champions League until the end.”

Playing for Italy again?

The versatile left winger’s personal goal is to help his new team and repay the trust of his coach and the entire Canadian team. And what if Spalletti calls him again to play for Italy? “Wearing the national team jersey, even if you are 32 years old and have won a European championship, is always a pride,” comments the Campanian athlete, originally from Frattamaggiore. “I am always available. Then, rightfully, the coach makes his choices,” he adds, confirming that he will always support Italy even if he no longer plays for the national team.

Representing Italy in America while many choose Arabia

At a time when many footballers are signing contracts with Arab teams, Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi are keeping the name of Italy high in North America.

From rivals to teammates and friends: Bernardeschi

The two talents went from being opponents in two ‘enemy’ teams to being teammates in Toronto. Their relationship has changed a lot. “I only knew Federico when we met in the national team. Then we were always rivals because he played for Juventus, and for us Neapolitans facing Juventus was always an extra stimulus, as for them facing Napoli,” highlights Insigne, who now spends a lot of time with his new teammate and his family, also because the two Italian footballers live in the same building in Toronto.

Dieta italiana anche all’estero

Contentissimo della sua scelta di trasferirsi in Canada e giocare nella lega americana Major League Soccer (MLS), Lorenzo Insigne non rinuncia alle sue abitudini italiane, in primo luogo l’alimentazione. L’attaccante continua a seguire i consigli del biologo nutrizionista italiano Sacha Sorrentino ed ha la fortuna di avere una moglie che a casa cucina benissimo. Anche in ritiro ed in trasferta la sua squadra dal 2022 – il Toronto FC – si impegna a fargli seguire il suo piano alimentare, procurandogli le pietanze italiane che più aiutano il suo rendimento ed il suo umore. Dopo essere cresciuto, anche calcisticamente, a Napoli, il calore della sua città gli manca, ma il suo nuovo gruppo sta facendo di tutto per farlo sentire a casa e Insigne mostra molta riconoscenza e tanta voglia di far bene.

Nuovo lifestyle a Toronto

Nonostante la difficoltà del processo di adattamento al campionato d’oltreoceano e ad una nuova vita, grazie all’ottima accoglienza della città di Toronto e del club canadese, il giocatore 32enne è riuscito a non sentire tantissimo il distacco dalla sua Napoli e ad abituarsi in fretta a un nuovo stile di vita. “Mi godo tanto la famiglia: la società ci lascia tanto tempo per stare insieme ai nostri familiari e per i giocatori questo è molto importante,” dice. Certo, la nostalgia a volte si fa sentire, ma l’esperienza all’estero è comunque interessante, positiva e molto costruttiva.

Napoli è casa

“Napoli manca perché è casa mia. Ci sono nato e cresciuto, ho vissuto momenti bellissimi con la maglia del Napoli,” spiega l’ex capitano della squadra partenopea, lamentandosi poi del fatto che la lega calcistica americana venga un po’ sottovalutata dagli italiani. “La MLS è molto difficile. Viene un po’ snobbata. Secondo me è un grande campionato, ci sono grandi giocatori.”

Lo scudetto del Napoli e la nuova stagione

 Dopo 11 stagioni con la maglia del Napoli, Insigne ha siglato l’accordo con il club canadese. L’anno successivo, l’agognata vittoria dello scudetto per la squadra bianco- azzurra. “Sono sempre il primo tifoso del Napoli. L’anno scorso i giocatori e il mister ci hanno fatto vivere momenti indimenticabili che stavamo aspettando – da tifosi – da tanto tempo,” spiega Insigne, che poi commenta le difficoltà che il Napoli sta incontrando quest’anno. “Il calcio è così. Ho visto che si stanno riprendendo e, sicuramente, lotteranno per arrivare in Champions fino alla fine.”

La nazionale?

L’obiettivo personale della versatile ala sinistra è aiutare la sua nuova squadra e ripagare della fiducia il suo allenatore e tutto il team canadese. E se dovesse arrivare la chiamata di Spalletti per giocare nuovamente per l’Italia? “La maglia della nazionale, anche se uno ha 32 anni e ha vinto un europeo, è sempre un orgoglio indossarla,” commenta l’atleta campano, originario di Frattamaggiore. “Sono sempre a disposizione. Poi, giustamente, l’allenatore fa le sue scelte,” aggiunge, confermando che tiferà sempre per l’Italia anche nell’eventualità in cui non dovesse più giocare in nazionale. 

America invece di Arabia

In un momento in cui tanti calciatori stanno firmando contratti con squadre arabe, Lorenzo Insigne e Federico Bernardeschi tengono alto il nome dell’Italia in Nord America.

Da rivali ad amici e compagni: Bernardeschi

I due talenti sono passati dall’essere avversari in due squadre ‘nemiche’ ad essere compagni di squadra a Toronto. Il loro rapporto è molto cambiato. “Federico lo conoscevo solo quando ci incontravamo in nazionale. Poi siamo stati sempre rivali perché lui giocava con la Juve e per noi napoletani affrontare la Juventus era sempre uno stimolo in più, come per loro affrontare il Napoli,” rimarca Insigne, che invece oggi passa molto tempo insieme al nuovo compagno di squadra ed alla famiglia di quest’ultimo, anche perché i due calciatori italiani vivono nello stesso palazzo a Toronto.
