It’s a historic moment for Cape Verdean basketball. The newly-formed Kriol Star team, founded in October 2024, has clinched a spot in the Basketball Africa League (BAL) playoffs in its debut season. And they did it in the most spectacular way—by defeating the reigning champions, Petro de Luanda, in a thrilling overtime battle (71-69) in front of a roaring crowd at Dakar Arena.
Ivan Almeida
Driven by a fearless and determined group, Kriol Star leaned on a masterful performance from team leader Ivan Almeida. The Cape Verdean veteran delivered 14 points, 13 rebounds, and 8 assists, showcasing his incredible versatility by playing four different positions—from point guard to power forward. Alongside him, his older brother Joel Almeida made a key contribution, while the energetic Anderson Correia added 16 points and 5 rebounds to help topple the Angolan powerhouse.
Exclusive Interview
Speaking to Seneweb and ViaggioSport after the game, Ivan Almeida couldn’t hide his emotion:
“This is such a special moment. To see this team—still unknown just a few months ago—qualify for the playoffs against the defending champions… it’s unbelievable. We’re representing Cape Verde. We want to inspire young people and show them that anything is possible with hard work.”
The Vision
But this win represents much more than a sporting achievement—it’s the culmination of a bold vision driven by the Almeida brothers. Kriol Star was born out of a foundation launched by Ivan and Joel to give Cape Verdean youth access to education, basketball training, and real opportunities. What began as a social initiative has, in less than a year, evolved into the country’s first professional team to reach the BAL.
Through Kriol Star, the brothers are building more than a club—they’re creating a model at the intersection of sport, social impact, and sustainable development. While still competing at the highest level, they’re turning their platform into a force for good, drawing attention from international investors along the way. It’s proof that African athletes can be founders, mentors, and agents of change.
The Almeida Brothers
At 35, Ivan remains the heart and soul of this team. Born in Praia, he has been a pillar of Cape Verde’s national team for over a decade, known for his leadership, vision, and relentless effort. Now, together with his brother Joel, he’s channeling that experience into something bigger: paving the way for the next generation.
Beyond the scoreboard, this victory symbolizes Cape Verde’s rise on the African basketball stage. Backed by a bold structure and committed players, Kriol Star isn’t just winning games—they’re rewriting history.
BAL Playoffs
The 2025 BAL playoffs will take place at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, South Africa, from June 6 to 14. And now, the rest of the continent will have to take the Cape Verdeans seriously.
