Georges Niang: Ready for the Play-in and Senegal

Eyes on the Playoffs

Veteran Leadership

Georges Niang, the versatile forward for the Atlanta Hawks, is ready to make an impact in the team’s upcoming Play-In Tournament. Although he was absent from today’s regular-season finale against the Orlando Magic, his focus is already on the crucial games ahead. The Hawks are heading into the Play-In with the goal of securing a spot in the playoffs.

Hawks play-in

The Play-In Tournament will see the Hawks compete for the 7th seed in the Eastern Conference. They will face the Orlando Magic, who are currently the 7th seed, in a high-stakes game that will determine whether the Hawks will secure the 7th seed directly or have to battle for the 8th seed in a subsequent match-up. If they win, they will move on to face the 2nd-seeded Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs. If they lose, they will have another chance in a game against the winner of the Heat vs. Bulls Play-In match-up to try and claim the 8th spot (to face the Cavs inn the playoffs).

Since joining the Hawks in February 2025, Niang has been a valuable player off the bench, contributing with his scoring and leadership. His experience in both the NBA and G-League has helped him become a steady presence in Atlanta’s rotation.

Senegalese roots

Born to a Senegalese father and an American mother, Niang is especially proud of his heritage. He has often expressed his desire to represent Senegal on the international basketball stage. “I love being Senegalese,” Niang shared in an exclusive interview. “It would be an incredible honor to wear the Senegal jersey.”

NIang is happy to have a 100% Senegalese player in his squad – Mouhamed Gueye – to share thoughts and plans about Senegal.

As the Play-In approaches, Niang’s mindset remains focused on one thing: winning. “It’s about winning now,” he said. “Every game counts, and we’re ready to fight for it.”

Challenges and Dreams

Niang’s journey to the NBA has not been without its challenges. Drafted in 2016 by the Indiana Pacers, he spent time developing in the G-League, which he credits as a pivotal stage in his career. “The G-League was one of the best things that happened to me,” Niang reflected. “It gave me the chance to grow, be humble and improve.”

This season, Niang has been a crucial part of the Hawks’ success, contributing an average of 9.4 points per game and bringing leadership to the team. His contributions, particularly as a reliable scorer off the bench, will be essential in the Play-In Tournament.

African basketball

Beyond the Play-In, Niang is passionate about the future of African basketball. As the Basketball Africa League (BAL) continues to grow, he sees it as a vital platform for showcasing African talent. “Africa has so much untapped talent,” Niang said. “We need to keep developing players and giving them opportunities to reach the NBA and beyond.”

Niang’s commitment to his roots is clear in his support of initiatives like the SEED Academy and his ongoing efforts to promote African basketball. He’s excited to see how the BAL continues to evolve and provide African players with the exposure they need to make it to the global stage.

The Lions

With the Play-In Tournament just around the corner, Niang’s dreams remain high. Not only is he focused on reaching the NBA Playoffs, but he also has his sights set on representing Senegal at the international level. “I can’t wait to represent Senegal one day, hopefully this Summer,” he said with determination.
