Aboubakar Gakou on Petro’s Semifinal Berth: “Maybe we’ll do it twice in a row”

Defending Champions

Petro de Luanda is back in familiar territory — the BAL semifinals — and once again, the Angolan powerhouse looks locked in.

With a dominant win over US Monastir at the SunBet Arena in Pretoria, the defending champions showed poise, control, and intensity on both ends of the floor. They executed their game plan with precision, choking Monastir’s offensive rhythm and asserting their physicality inside.

“We played well. We followed the coach’s instructions and did a great job on defense and offense,” said forward Aboubakar Pedro Gakou after the game. “We fear no one. We just come out and do our job.”

Gakou, who has been a cornerstone of Petro since his early years, now sees an opportunity for history to repeat itself. “This year we lost to APR. Last year we lost to Monastir, but then won it all. Maybe we’ll do it twice in a row. That’s what we’re aiming for.”

Built from Within

At 28, Gakou is not just a veteran: he’s Petro’s beating heart. Having spent his entire career with the Luanda club, his pride runs deep. “It means everything to represent Petro,” he said. “I’ve been with this club since I was a kid. I’m grateful for it.”

Asked about the toughest parts of becoming a professional basketball player, Gakou emphasized the importance of mindset: “It’s about hard work every day. Discipline. Consistency. Staying focused on my game. That’s why I’m here today.”

BAL’s Rising Potential

The Basketball Africa League is in its fifth season and its impact is growing. Players like Gakou are its strongest ambassadors. “In ten years, I believe the BAL will be the biggest or one of the biggest leagues in the world,” he said. “The NBA and FIBA are doing a great job. This league has real potential.”

Advice for the Next Generation

With his team now just two wins away from another title, Gakou also had a message for young African players dreaming of a successful career in basketball: “Work hard. Believe in yourself. Stay focused. Anything is possible if you stay committed.”

As the playoffs heat up, Petro de Luanda is sending a clear message: The champions are not done yet.
