Djunta Mao in Paris: Music, Basketball and Cape Verdean Pride

Celebration and Fundraiser

Partying for a good cause makes fun even better. On July 4th, Paris is the place to be for a night full of Cape Verdean energy, music, and purpose.

The event is called Djunta Mao, a phrase in Cape Verdean Creole meaning “join hands” or more broadly “come together in solidarity”. And that’s exactly what this night is about: unity, culture, and a shared love for basketball.

From 5 PM to midnight, Le Noctis in Saint-Denis will transform into a hub of live music, Cape Verdean dance, traditional batuku rhythms, fashion, food, and celebration. But behind the party is a much bigger purpose: raising funds to help the Cape Verde men’s national basketball team, the Tubarões Azuis (Blue Sharks), reach AfroBasket 2025, the African FIBA Championship set to take place on August 12-24 in Angola.

Live music, DJs & cultural vibes

The lineup features an exciting blend of artists from Cape Verde and beyond, including Patche Di Rima, MC Malcriado, 4Rain, Lucyl Cruz, Pilax, Gilzanira, Sonia Music, and Papa London. DJs like DJ Nays, DJ Cabos, DJ Dadinho, and DJ Adrien will keep the energy high all night.

There will also be a fashion show, a comedy set, and a special workshop to learn the Cape Verdean national anthem, turning the event into an interactive celebration of identity and belonging.

It all happens on the eve of Quai 54, adding extra energy to a weekend where sport and culture take center stage in Paris.

 Why it matters

Cape Verde’s national team made history by finishing 4th at AfroBasket 2021 and qualifying for the FIBA World Cup for the first time ever in 2023. Now, as they prepare for AfroBasket 2025, they face a challenge off the court: Funding the journey.

With a packed summer schedule, including a training camp in Paris and a tournament in Lebanon, the team needs over €400,000 to travel and compete. The goal is to raise at least €80,000 through the Djunta Mao fundraiser and the support of the global Cape Verdean community and allies.

Whether you’re Cape Verdean or simply a fan of sport, culture, and good vibes this night is for you.

If you’re in Paris, don’t miss the chance to join the celebration in person.
If not, you can still support the team with a donation:
